Whitney Pier

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a dear wife, mother, sister and friend, Elfreda (Alleyne) MacDonald, 84, on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, surrounded in love and prayer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her cherished family.

Born in Sydney, Elfreda was the daughter of the late Dennis and Helena (Lawrence) Alleyne.

Elfreda is survived by her husband and soul mate, Daniel MacDonald; their children, Julian ‘Butch’ Alleyne (Betty), Lillian (Todd) Marsman, Daniel (Laurel), Jimmy (Lori), Levina (Darren) Googoo, Noreen (Charles) MacKinnon, Darren (Patti Lynn); her beautiful grandchildren, Todd, Kyla, Brandon, Marissa, Raven, Cassie, Faith, Andrew, Jayden, Ethan, Kael, Dante, Jaxon, Jamison and Connor. Sharing in our loss are her many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Elfreda is also survived by her brother, Joseph (Lucy) Worrell; sisters, Rose Holland and Diana Alleyne; sister-in-law, Flora English; brothers-in-law, Hughie (Rose) MacDonald, Johnnie MacKinnon and her best friend, Marie Muise.

Besides her parents, Elfreda was predeceased by her brother, Danny Alleyne; sisters, Julia Alleyne, Shirley Alleyne, Gloria Alleyne; brother-in-law, Dave Holland and mother-in-law, Margaret MacDonald.

Elfreda loved the company of her friends and family.  She loved her weekly trips in the Pier with her sisters and Tuesday night bingo at St. Philips African Orthodox Church, where she made many lifelong friends. Her words of wisdom, quirking sayings, quick wit and her wonderful gift of finding the good in everyone and everything will live in each of us. When she loved, she loved completely.

Visitation for the late Elfreda MacDonald will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. in St. Philips African Orthodox Church, Whitney Pier, with Archbishop Vincent Waterman officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held at the Menelik Hall, 88 Laurier St., Whitney Pier. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date.

Special thanks to the many homecare workers and VON workers who provided special care to our mother.

Donations in memory of Elfreda may be made to St. Philips African Orthodox Church.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

My deepest condolences Mr. MacDonald and your family. It has been a long time since I had seen Mrs. MacDonald but my fondest memory of her is her smile, it was contagious. When I would come home for a visit I always drove up Laurier Street from Lingan Road…my ritual I guess, but I always knew I was "really home" when I would see Mrs. Mac Donald sitting outside enjoying the day, and I would look for her, look for that welcoming smile, and she would wave and I knew…..I was "home". I sit here shedding some tears thinking how hard it is to loose a Mom, hard shoes to fill for sure. She is gone but will not be forgotten, her vivacious smile lives on in her children, you all have her smile. A reflection everyday of your Mom, and a memory truly kept close. Many blessings Butch, Lillian, Danny, Jimmy, Levina, Noreen and Darren, your Mom was an amazing spirit, and she will be missed.

To the Allyene Family, Please accept my deepest and heart felt condolences on the passing of Elfreda (Allenye)MacDonald. Unfortunately I did not receive any information on her passing until May 22, 2016, the same day that I am writing this. The Alleyene family and the Worrell family have always been a blended family. In fact I often felt closer to the Alleyne family than my own biological family. The fact someone I cared for very deeply passed away one day before my 63rd birthday and no one in my family had the decency to contact me and allow me to say goodbye to a woman whom I considered a aunt has deeply sadden me. After my parents passed away the only people that stepped up to offer me any kind of help was my godmother; Helena Alleyne who I loved like a second mother and her daughter and my mother's name sake Elfreda Alleyne, who I love like an aunt. I recall having several meals at her table with her family. The relationship that I had with her kids are memories that I carry with me to this day. Elfreda will be truly missed. I know she is in a better place, pain free, happy and at peace. Her loving nephew …Johnnie and his wife Barb
