June 3, 1927-Nov 23, 2011, Margaree Valley, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Jean, born in Sydney Mines, graduated from High School in 1944. That fall she enrolled in the Department of National Defense Commercial Course, North Sydney. Subsequently, Jean was employed by DND at Point Edward Naval Base. After four years she attended New Brunswick Bible Institute for three years and Provincial Teachers College, Truro, for one year.
In 1953 Jean was accepted as a member of SIM-then known as Sudan Interior Mission. Mid-January 1955 she sailed to Ethiopia, Africa, working with SIM for nearly 40 years, which included several years at Mission Headquarters, Scarborough, ON and two and a half years in Sudan.
Rewarding missionary years led to a happy retirement in Margaree.
Jean was pre-deceased by her parents and brother, Robert; is survived by younger relatives and many long standing friends.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of the late Jean T. Shepherd will be held at the Margaree Valley Baptist Church, Margaree Valley, N.S. on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10-11 a.m. with memorial service to follow with Pastor Hugh Morrison officiating. Reception will be shared after the service. Burial will take place in Margaree Valley Baptist Cemetery, Margaree Valley.
Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or SIM.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
My deepest condolences to my dear mama Jean Max . In the early 1970 she was in a small town eastern part of Ethiopia on SIM mission with here beloved husband Mr Max. They were working very hard to extend the word of God specifically to the Somali community who are Muslims ; never heard of the good news . The studied the local language to make easy to associate with the target community . They did well .
Indeed to personal life as a tonnage boy thy immures me to stand faithfully bold in the love of Christ Jesus !!!
