Alexander Roderick ‘Roddie’ MacLeod died Oct. 29 at home in Dunvegan, surrounded by his family.
Dad was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Dunvegan, Inverness County, N.S. It was there in his beloved Dunvegan where he lived a long and full life. A life that reflected his commitment to family, faith, community and culture.
Dad was passionate about farming and was not deterred by the hard work and challenges that accompany the day to day life on the farm. He raised dairy and beef cattle, and during the early years he marketed milk, beef and produce throughout the local area using a horse and wagon.
He was named Post Master of the Dunvegan Post Office in 1955 and he delivered the mail daily to the Post Office in Chimney Corner.
Dad was a strong believer in, and had a deep rooted loyalty to the co-operative and credit union movement. In 2000, he received the Distinguished Co-operator Award recognizing the 25 years he served as director and president of the board of the Inverness Filene Credit Union as well as 15 years as a director and president of the board of the Shean Co-operative.
Dad was chairman of the Dunvegan Home and School Association for 10 years, trustee of the Inverness School Board for 12 years and board member of the Inverness Federation of Agriculture for seven years.
He drove the school bus with competence and care for many years. His determination that everyone be treated with fairness saw him selected president of his CUPE local.
In 1997 the Broad Cove Scottish Concert was dedicated to Mom and Dad, recognizing their life long contributions to both the parish and to the concert.
He is lovingly survived by his wife of 57 years, Christene (MacLellan) and their ten children, D.J. (Andrea), Mary (Jim), Siena (Michael), Christene, Rory (Donna), Donalda (Christopher), Theresa (Shawn), Ann (Eric), Augusta (Gary), Colonel (Cheryl) and 23 grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine Grant, Sr. Anne MacLeod, Margaret MacLellan and brother, Rev. A.J. MacLeod.
He was predeceased by his parents DanJoe and Mary Belle (Collins) and his brothers, Collins, Donald, J.D., Alex, Finlay, Fr. Colonel and his sister, Aurelia.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Broad Cove. The funeral will be held on Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Margaret of Scotland Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Central Inverness Palliative Care Society.
The Funeral is under the direction and care of Sunset Co-operative and Pier Community Funeral Home.
