Sydney
October 1, 1937 – April 12, 2025
It is with great sadness that we, the Wambolt family, announce the passing of Gordon ‘Gordie’ Marshall Wambolt on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney.
Born on October 1, 1937, in Sydney, Gordie was the son of the late George and Mae (Beech) Wambolt.
Gordie was employed at Eastern Bakeries in his earlier days and then pursued cabinet making and carpentry. He then went on to work at St. Theresa’s Parish Hall until his retirement in 1996.
In 1959, Gordie married Monica (MacPhee) and together they had four children and made a life in Sydney, later building a home and settling into retirement in Mull River. This would become a beautiful haven for all their family and friends, where wonderful memories were made over the years.
Gordie is survived by his children, David Wambolt of Mull River, Sherry (Danny) Fogarty of Sydney, Todd (Brenda) Wambolt of Prince George, BC and Lisa (Benny) Wambolt of Sydney; ‘Grampie’ to nine grandchildren, Lyndsay, Megan, Jessica, Rebecca, Gordon, Heidi, Geoffrey, Hollis and David; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor, Brynn, Eli, Willa, Kenna, Rowan, Colton, Sonny and Piper. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, Gordie was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Monica, a mere 12 days earlier; siblings, Powley ‘Chick’, Grace, Janet, Velzora ‘Tiny’, Marilyn ‘Buck’, Thelma, Melvin, Ace, Frank ‘Dutch’, George, Ernie, Earl, Ada and Erna.
In his younger days, Gordie played baseball and enjoyed sports his entire life – playing floor hockey at the hall. He spent countless hours in the country, hunting for deer and spending good times with friends. An avid baseball fan, he liked watching the games or a good country western movie, birdwatching, playing cards with his music on and a cup of tea. He could often be heard humming or whistling a tune and was forever insistent on his ‘good singing ability’. He enjoyed cultivation of growing things and as a point of humor to the rest of us – Gordie took great satisfaction in keeping a meticulously maintained lawn.
With gratitude for all he has done for our family, we will celebrate his life and hold close the memories we’ve made together.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the lives of Gordon and Monica Wambolt will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Saturday, April 19, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 4 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception will follow from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Sydney Curling Club, 619 George Street, Sydney.
Donations in memory of Gordie may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of NS.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
