Sydney

Monica Wambolt, aged 85 of Sydney, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2025, at MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney.

Born to a large family on January 9, 1940, to parents, Francis ‘Frank’ and Clothilda ‘Tillie’ (Bruce) MacPhee. Monica was one of ten children. As a young woman she attended Holy Angel’s High School and later worked in Blood Collections at St. Rita’s Hospital until her retirement in 1995.

Monica leaves behind her husband of 66 years, Gordon Wambolt; beloved children, David Wambolt of Mull River, Sherry (Danny) Fogarty of Sydney, Todd (Brenda) Wambolt of Prince George, BC, and Lisa (Benny) Wambolt of Sydney; sisters, Marie (the late Barney) MacNeil of Ontario, Peggy MacPhee of Mabou, Sally (Raymond) Hooper of Sydney, and brother, Frank MacPhee of Sydney.

Besides her parents, Monica is predeceased by siblings, Daniel (Mary Lou) MacPhee, Sr. Helen MacPhee, John (Joan) MacPhee, Mary (William) Fraser, and Florence (Nick) MacDonald.

Nanny Monica will forever be remembered as the best grandmother to her grandchildren, Lyndsay, Megan, Jessica, Rebecca, Gordon, Heidi, Geoffrey, Hollis, and David. Great-grandmother to Taylor, Brynn, Eli, Willa, Kenna, Rowan, Colton, Sonny and Piper. She will lovingly be missed by many nieces and nephews.

Monica was a storyteller, loved a good singsong around the bonfire, driving the dirt roads, beach-bumming and thunderstorms. She had an incredibly adventurous spirit and brought so much fun, laughter and wonder to our daily lives – often with a mischievous grin and a sparkle in her eye!

Most of all she embodied love in action – always ready to welcome you for a cup of tea, a meal, a bed or a welcome place for so many of us to feel we were home, we belonged, and we were loved.

We will cherish the time we were given with her and promise to keep her sweet spirit alive in our hearts always.

Donations in memory of Monica may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

“Children, Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” 1 John 3:18

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Online Condolences

My deepest sympathy to Monica’s family. I only met her a few times, but it felt like I’d known her forever. She was kind and fun. God rest her soul.                                                                                                                                                                         From: Linda Rankin

Am so sorry such news – I knew Monica from swimming at the Delta/Holiday Inn. Her present brought instant joy – the love for her family was so strong it was contagious – her goodness to everyone was evident and the envy of many.                               From: Mary MacEachern
