Sydney
It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Eileen (Gillis) Ley, on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, at the age of 86.
Eileen was born on March 18, 1938, to Alex and Emma (Gillis).
Eileen is survived by her husband and soulmate of 67 years, Wilbert Ley; her only son, Lawrence and daughter-in-law, Shauna (Hillman); granddaughters, Larissa (Andre), Kenzie (Easton), and Michelle; grandson, Jeffrey Ley; great-grandchildren, Maverick, Stanley, and Victoria. Special mention to her sister-in-law and best friend, Eleanor Gillis and to her amazing neighbors and friends.
Besides her parents, Eileen was predeceased by four brothers, Melvin, Greg, Richard, and Wayne.
Eileen was a true warrior with great faith and tenacity. She worked and lived in Whitney Pier her whole life. She was an active member of her church and community and volunteered at Whitney Pier Legion. Eileen worked at Feder’s Jewelry Store for forty-two years and continued her employment at Whitney Pier Credit Union until her retirement. Her life reflected selflessness and was committed to the needs and happiness of others. Family and friends were her greatest joy, and she valued spending time with them. She will be missed by her community, neighborhood and all who knew her.
A huge thank you to the staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care for making Eileen’s final days comfortable during her brief stay. We would also like to thank MacGillivary Guest Home and Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their special care and support.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Eileen Ley will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Sunday, December 15, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Reception at the funeral home will follow the service.

God saw you getting tired,
and a cure was not to be,
so He put His arms around you,
and whispered, “Come to Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you,
and saw you pass away,
and though we loved you dearly,
we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
