Sydney

It is with great sorrow that we, the family, announce the passing of Martina (Currie) Coffin, age 81 on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, following a brief illness.

Martina was born on October 27, 1943, to John and Christina (Gillis) Currie and is survived by her son, Jim (Susan); daughter, Beverly Candelora (Andy); granddaughters, Holly, Melanie, and Rebecca; siblings, Jean Musgrave, Carolyn MacEachern, Darlene Gilson (Ed), Elaine Mikkelsen (Sheldon), and Larry (Susan); sisters-in-law, Margaret Ellen Currie, Mildred Nugent (Frank), Mary Coffin, Caramel Coffin, and brothers-in-law, Jack Coffin (Caramel), Bob Coffin (Cheryl), and Trevor Everill.

Besides her parents, Martina was predeceased by her loving husband, Carmen; brothers, John Alec, Darrell, John Patrick, in infancy, and sister, Diane; father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Mary Coffin; sisters-in-law, Elaine Coffin, Donna Everill, and Sue MacDougall; brothers-in-law, Frank MacEachern, Roddie Musgrave, William Coffin, and Donsie Coffin, along with several nieces and nephews.

Martina was a woman of great faith and a true prayer warrior. Her life reflected selflessness and prioritizing the needs and happiness of others. Family was her greatest joy, and she valued spending time with them. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Mom loved to laugh, she was known for her witty personality and quick one-liners. Mom’s hobbies included weekly shopping trips with her daughter, Beverly, daily phone calls with her son, Jim, chatting about everything, but always ending in political banter, with mom always being right.

Mom especially loved Sunday visits and home cooked meals, made with love by her daughter-in-law, Susan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her special girl, Holly Winkles, who in turn, always had time and love for her Nanny.

A huge thank you to the staff of the Palliative Care unit for the special care provided to our mother, Martina during her stay.

There will be no visitation for the late Martina Coffin. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 29, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Martina may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton of a charity of one’s choice.

Mom was known for many sayings, but most memorably, “See you Tuesday!”

God saw you getting tired,
and a cure was not to be,
so He put His arms around you,
and whispered, “Come to Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you,
and saw you pass away,
and though we loved you dearly,
we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
