Ottawa/Whitney Pier

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Carmella MacDonald, at the age of 88, on October 10, 2024, in Ottawa.

Born and raised in Sydney, Carmella was the daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret Keough. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter.

Carmella is survived by her daughters, Paula and Tracey (Matthew), and her cherished granddaughter, Chelsea (Ben). She will also be missed by her brothers, Dennis and Frank (Esther), as well as many dear nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She held a special place in her heart for her niece, Laura and nephew, Terry.

Carmella proudly dedicated 40 years of her life to Nova Scotia Power, where she formed lifelong friendships that brought her joy. A lifelong parishioner of Holy Redeemer Church, she held a deep commitment to her faith and community, contributing countless hours as a member of the CWL, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and President of the parish council. She often reminisced about her early morning walks to Mass and the cherished moments spent praying the rosary with family and friends. Even after moving to Ottawa, she maintained her connection to Holy Redeemer by watching streamed Masses with Tracey every Sunday.

Carmella had a passion for cooking and baking, renowned for her famous pork pies and cherry squares. Welcoming friends and family for tea and treats was one of her greatest joys. Above all, Carmella’s proudest role was that of Nanny. She devoted herself to Chelsea, attending every school concert, birthday party, and special event. Their daily after-school calls were a treasured routine, and she took immense pride in the extraordinary young woman Chelsea has become.

Carmella will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her. As her dear friend Fr. Erroll often sang, “A mother’s love is a blessing, no matter where you roam.”

There will be no visitation for the late Carmella MacDonald. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Carmella may be made to Holy Redeemer Parish.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
