South Bar

It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph ‘Joe’ Edmond Fleet, on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.

Born in South Bar, Joe was the son of the late Malcolm and Mary Ann (MacDonald) Fleet.

As a young lad, Joe pursued a career at sea as a Merchant Mariner, Canadian Coast Guard, and Shell Oil tankers. The latter taking him around the world. In his later years he was a ‘Pinkerton Man’ as a security officer. His last gig was working at the Iconic Sid’s Used Furniture Store answering the phone and helping his good friend, Regimental Sergeant Major, Frank Currie (deceased). Joe loved baseball, especially the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Joe was a lifetime member of Branch 138, Ashby Legion. Joe was an avid reader and could offer comment on just about any topic. He would do this at many a local coffee shop or the mall.

Joseph is survived by his niece, Paula Fleet, Toronto, who he loved very much; Donald Gauthier and his son, Phalen, who he treated as son and grandson; Judy O’Day at Judy’s Sewing Centre, where Judy always had a hug to cheer Joe up. The girls at TD Bank always cheered him up.

Joe was predeceased by his good friends, Ret. RSM, Frank Curry and Richard Chabassol (RCMP); nephews, Christopher and Robert Fleet; as well as brother, Bernard Fleet.

Special thanks to the staff at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay who treated Joe with respect, even during his struggles. To Dr. Nathaniel Oyibo, thanks for your personal and professional care on Joe’s final day.

Memorial service to celebrate the life of Joseph Fleet will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Rob Jones officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date.
