Sydney/Halifax
It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Adola ‘Betty’ Metcalfe on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at the age of 103. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born in Belle Isle, Newfoundland, Betty was the daughter of the late Albert and Violet (Day) Metcalfe.
Early in life Betty moved to Glace Bay where she lived for many years before moving to Sarnia, Ontario. After her daughter’s passing, she moved home to Sydney, where she lived with her niece, Heather Almon and family.
At a young age, Betty served with the military during WWII with the Women’s Corps, then later participated with the Legion. She was a life-time member of the Ashby Legion, Sydney.
Betty enjoyed her daily visits from her niece, Heather (Edgar), and her daily cup of Tim Hortons tea which she claimed was “the best tea ever made”.
Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her daughter, Enid; sister, Yvonne, and brothers, John ‘Jack’, and William.
Betty is survived by her many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to “My Cape Breton Home for Seniors”, Westmount, and “Arborstone Enhanced Care”, Halifax, for their care of Betty in her time of need. Thanks to the staff of the second floor of Arborstone for the love and care they gave to our aunt Betty whom they referred to as “Grandma”. She will be forever missed by many people.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Betty Metcalfe will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, September 9, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Jane Keller LLWL officiating. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay, where she will be laid to rest with her family.
In lieu of flowers, Betty asked that donations be made to the SPCA.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
