Whitney Pier

It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of David Benjamin Young on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Born on September 4, 1946, David was the son of the late Ben and Florence (Warren) Young, South Bar.

David married Syliva (Campbell), the love of his life, on June 29, 1968, at Holy Redeemer Parish in Whitney Pier. David and Syliva moved to Toronto, Ontario shortly after and lived there for six years. While there, David worked at Anaconda Brass and David and Syliva welcomed their two sons, Darren (1970) and Mark (1973) into their lives. David, Sylvia and family moved back to Sydney in 1973, where they eventually settled into their family home on St. Anns Street in Whitney Pier. David worked for Irving Oil and later, MacLeod’s Fuels, until his retirement in 2013.

David is survived by his wife Sylvia (Campbell); sons, Darren (Cindy) Young, Grande Prairie, Alberta, and Mark (Nancy) Young, Georges River; grandchildren, Douglas, Logan, Tyler, Tara (Ruperelia) and Jenessa (MacEachern); great-grandchildren, Aiden and Maya; sister, Susan (Mark) Biagi, Victoria, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, David was predeceased by brother, Warren and sisters, Marilynn (MacLeod) and Linda.
David loved spending time with family and always loved stopping in for tea or having visitors stop in and see him and Sylvia. David was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, especially with his two sons. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed cooking with his grandson, Tyler.

Donations in memory of David may be made to the Tom McNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund by calling the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation at 902-567-7752.

There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place as per his wishes. The family thanks all the family, friends, and health care providers that supported them during David’s courageous fight against cancer.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
