Sydney

It is with broken hearts that we, the family announce the passing of our beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother and uncle, William ‘Brian’ Costigan, age 70, on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on December 21, 1953, in Sydney, Brian was a son of the late Michael and Agnes (Whelan) Costigan.

Brian worked as an Electrician operating his own company “Conary Enterprises” in Cape Breton until the opportunity arose to work at Bruce Power Plant in Ontario. He spent many years working there where Brian and Debbie had many good times spending their evenings out on the town with the “boys from work”. He prided himself on the work he had done and passing down his vast knowledge to those who would later follow in his footsteps.

After retirement, Brian enjoyed telling stories, sharing his life experiences with his friends and family about his time at work, raising his children, the places he had been, the “butter” he forgot at the store, nights out at bingo or the casino and dancing with his wife, Debbie to their favourite song “The still of the night”. Brian was so proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whenever Brian seen them, whether it be an hour, day or week, his eyes would fill with tears of pride and happiness to see them. He wasn’t shy to let anyone, and everyone know “that’s my boy or girl!”. Brian was also a proud member of the Holy Redeemer church in Whitney Pier.

Brian was kind, funny and his heart was bigger than he was. No matter who walked through the doors, they were treated like family and with that came his many names that he was proud of such as big guy, dad, pup, papa and pops.

Brian is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Debbie; son, Brian Costigan and daughters, Tonya (Ross) Costigan- Covey, April Costigan, Michelle Tortola, and Deborah (Robbie) Mills. Brian was a proud grandfather to 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He will also be forever missed by his sisters, Peggy, Mary, Marie, Martha, Lorriane, Nancy (Wayne), Linda (Murdock), Helen (George) and brothers, Michael (Pat), Joe (Elizabeth) and John (Meridith).

Besides his parents, Brian is predeceased by his sisters, Brenda, Mary and Beatrice; brothers, Tom, Sam and brothers-in-law, Arno, Chalmers, Phil and Jimmy.

The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the 4A nurses, doctors and sitters from Osprey Angels and Marizone. Your compassion, care, patience and knowledge have not gone unnoticed, and we will forever be thankful for all you have done for us during Brian’s stay.

Visitation for the late Brian Costigan will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Redeemer Church on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Donations in memory of Brian may be made to Holy Redeemer Building Fund.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
