North River, St. Ann’s Bay

We, the family, are heart broken to announce the sudden passing of Joseph ‘Joe’ Francis Burroughs, on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at home.

Born on May 4, 1958, in Dominion, Joe was the son of late Neil and Carmel (Nicholson) Burroughs.

Joe leaves behind his beloved wife of 42 years, Theresa (Spencer) Burroughs. He was a devoted father to Joey (Miranda), Cory (Brandi and her children, Ayden, Parker, and Hailey) and Krista (Tim). Joe leaves behind his most beloved granddaughter, Everly Jane, and his best four-legged friend, Cooper. Joe is also survived by brothers, Johnny (Dee), Brian (Brenda); sisters, Ann Marie, Francine (Steve), Cathy, Leanna (Steve), and many nieces and nephews.

Beside his parents, Joe was predeceased by sister, Shellie; brother, Neil; brother-in-law, Jimmy; niece, Shellie, and her children, Jackson, and Emma; and his beloved dogs, Tammy, Taylor, Rascal, Copper, and to hopefully first greet him, Rambo.

Joe was an incredibly hard-working man. After spending most of his adult life in various jobs, including an employee at the Baddeck Hospital where he formed strong bonds with his co-workers. He finally began his dream job as a school bus driver (where he got his summers off to ride his bike). Being a bus driver provided him a source of joy, where he formed special bonds with the children on his route. Affectionately known as “Bus Driver Joe” he brightened their days with his warm smile and kindness. Joe’s genuine care extended beyond passengers; he always had treats for the dogs waiting at the bus stops, a gesture that brought joy to both the animals and their owners.

Throughout his life, Joe’s heart overflowed with love for his family, his dogs, and his motorcycles. Joe embraced his love of motorcycles and became a member of the “Defenders” riding club and then “The Salty Shores”, where he found comradery and friendship among fellow enthusiasts. His love for motorcycles and the open road brought him immense happiness and fulfillment during this chapter of his life. He loved going on bike trips with friends but above all with Theresa and Cory.

Joe enjoyed gatherings in his and Brian’s garages where friends and family would stop by regularly to visit and have a beer. He also looked forward to his weekend video chats with Everly.

Joe’s legacy of love, kindness, and strength will forever be cherished by his family and friends. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with his big heart and caring nature.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Joe Burroughs will be held at the Indian Brook Fire Hall, 46177 Cabot Trail, Indian Brook on Sunday, July 21, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the memorial service at 2 p.m. followed by bar and cheers to Joe after the service.

Donations in memory of Joe may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
