Barbara Long, beloved member of the Sydney community, passed away peacefully at the age of 90, on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.

Born in Halifax on July 20, 1933, to the late Leo and Theresa (McCuish) Sutherland, Barbara’s life was marked by devotion, laughter, and love. A faithful member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Barbara’s Catholic faith was a cornerstone of her life. She exemplified the principles of compassion, kindness, and generosity through her actions and words.

Barbara dedicated many years of her life to Snow White Cleaners, where her dedication and hard work left a lasting impact until her well-deserved retirement.

Barbara found great joy in the company of her extended family at Griffin Street Senior Complex, cherishing the bonds she formed with special friends, Kay, Stella, and Jeanette, who provided unwavering support and companionship throughout the years.

Barbara’s zest for life was evident in her love for TV bingo, card games, and social gatherings in the lounge. In her youth, she relished the thrill of playing darts, always embracing the competitive spirit with enthusiasm.
Known for her positive outlook and infectious laughter, Barbara had a remarkable ability to brighten any room she entered. Her warmth and genuine nature endeared her to all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her.

Above all else, Barbara’s love for her family knew no bounds. They were her greatest source of pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent in their company.

Barbara is survived by her brother, George (Sharon); sister, Elizabeth White (Bill); sisters-in-law, Betty and Rochella; many nieces and nephews, who were like her own and who she loved very much and cousin, Jenny McNamara, who she loved like a sister.

Besides her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Roy; brothers, Joe, Leo, and Gordon; sister, Shirley Penticost and sister-in-law, Edna Sutherland.

Thank you to the staff of the Palliative care unit, New Waterford Nursing staff 2nd floor, Seaview Manor, Homecare and the VON. Also, a special thank you to Mary Lou Andrews, who Barbara had many laughs with during their weekly visits and was with her at the end.

Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. While she will be deeply missed, her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

There will be no visitation for the late Barbara Long. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines at a later date.
