With great sorrow, we the family, announce the passing of Bernard ‘Bernie’ Evans Murphy, on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, after a brief but difficult battle with cancer. Bernie passed away peacefully in his sleep in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at the Sydney City Hospital on October 15, 1972, Bernie was the son of Gary Evans Murphy and Connie M (Young) Murphy. Bernie was the later joined by his younger brother, Steven and the two formed a bond that lasted his whole life.
With his family, Bernie travelled throughout Canada, living in such places as in the far north of Saskatchewan and southern part of Ontario, but to Bernie, Cape Breton was home. In his travels he gained a unique perspective and knowledge of people and places across the country. Upon his return to Sydney, Bernie spent many summers working with his uncle John MacLean at the cruse ships making friends and meeting people from all over the world.
Besides his parents, Bernie leaves behind his brother, Steve (Sarah) and his pride and joy, nieces, Grace, and Emily Murphy; aunts, Karen (Young) MacLean (John) and Sheila (Murphy) MacLeod (Harold); uncles, Jerry Young, Terry (Hellan) Melanson, Stanley, Robert (Christina), James (Jennifer), and Roy (Tanya) Murphy. He will always be remembered by his close, lifelong friends, Darrin Murphy, and Rose MacIsaac.
Bernie was preceded by his grandparents, Evans and Tillie Murphy, Ralph and Agnes Young and uncles, Tony and Kevin Young.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Bernie Murphy will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Saturday, January 6, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date.
Donations in memory of Bernie may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

We enjoyed Bernie’s company over the years when he accompanied his Uncle John to craft shows. Bernie was always upbeat and enthusiastic and sure made times with him pleasant. We were lucky to have known him. Our condolences to his family and friends.
