Whitney Pier

It is with deep regret the family of Suzanna ‘Suzie’ Gray announce her passing on Monday, March 3, 2025, at home.

Born in Sydney on June 6, 1936, Suzie was the daughter of the late Maurice and Sarah Campbell.

Suzie is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Ian; daughters, Suzanne (Blair), and Donna (Paul); two cherished grandsons, John-James, and Tyler; sister, Juanita (Mike); brother, Edward (Diane), all of Sydney; sister-in-law, May (Tony) Rossi, England; as well as several nieces and nephews, and her close neighborhood friends who were just like family.

Besides her parents, Suzie was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ (William) Legge; brothers, William ‘Billy’, Daniel (Dorothy), Sears, and Maurice (Margie), as well as a sister in infancy.

As a young woman, Suzie worked at Archie Nathanson’s in the Pier. On an evening out with friends at a dance at the Seaman’s Mission on Dominion Street, she met the love of her life, Ian, the Scotsman who won her heart. They fell in love and were married at Holy Redeemer Church and went on a six-month honeymoon on the MV Charlton Mira on Ian’s last tour of duty, followed by two months in Scotland with Ian’s parents and sister. Suzie and Ian had a wonderful life together raising their two daughters. Her greatest wish of having a grandson came true – twice! She adored “her boys”, JJ and Ty.

Suzie always looked forward to her weekly outings to Holy Redeemer bingo with her friends and family. She was known for her baking and cooking skills and often had requests for her cabbage rolls and strawberry squares. Suzie could always be relied upon to supply trays of goodies for a wedding or baby shower.

The family would like to extend the greatest appreciation and thanks to the VON Adult Day Centre and the City Homemakers Service for their kindness and caring to Suzie during the past several years.

There will be no visitation for the late Suzie Gray. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 10, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Suzie may be made to the VON Adult Day Centre or to the Cape Breton SPCA.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
