Whitney Pier

It is with a heavy heart that we, the family of Carmel Marie MacKinnon announce her passing on Saturday, February 15, 2025, in Sydney.

Born in Sydney on June 15, 1947, Carmel was the daughter of the late Carl and Lillian Neville.

Carmel is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harold; sons, Paul (Donna) and Scott (Laurie); beloved grandchildren, Ashley (Andrew), Alexander (Cassie), Andrea and Haley (Raymond); seven cherished great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Wilson, Brenda (Roddie) MacMillan, Ontario, and twin sister, Carol (Donald) McKay; sisters-in-law, Gail Johnson, Hay Cove and Anne Neville, Ontario; as well as several nieces and nephews, especially Glenn and Christine, with whom Carmel and Harold had a special bond for several years.

Besides her parents, Carmel was predeceased by her brothers, John, James ‘Jackie’, Joseph, and Maurice; in-laws, Dan and Mary, Hay Cove, and brothers-in-law, Donnie and Michael.

Carmel successfully operated Car-Mac Fuels in the Pier and enjoyed camping, knitting and crocheting. Her most enjoyment came from raising her family and she was over the moon when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Carmel MacKinnon will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Saturday, February 22, 2025. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks at a later date.

Donations in memory of Carmel may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
