It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Rose Marie (Long) Johnstone at the age of 84, on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at home with her loving family by her side.

Born and raised in Whitney Pier, Rose was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Young) Long.

Rose leaves behind her children to grieve, Wanda, Darlene, Laurie (Drew), James, and granddaughter, Vanessa, who was like her own daughter; her grandchildren, Vanessa, Gary, Candice, Timothy, Justin, Holly, Jessica, and Jordan, along with 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Rose is also survived by her brothers, Lloyd Long, Robert Long, Kenneth Long and Leo Long; sisters, Ollie Hubert, Joyce Cote, Leona MacNeil, and Colleen Sampson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Rose was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, James Johnstone; son, Roy Johnstone; great-grandson, Riley Young; brothers, Arthur Long, Roy Long, John Long, and Wallace Long; sister, Shirley Postlewaite, and sisters-in-law, Mima Johnstone, Glennice Sheppard, and Faye MacNeil.

Rose started working at a young age in Whitney Pier at numerous places throughout the years and spent 17 years at the Vocational School before retiring.

In addition to being a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great- grandmother, Rose enjoyed bowling, playing darts, and being part of the Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 128 (Whitney Pier) Legion in her younger years. We can’t forget to mention the summers she enjoyed camping with the women she met throughout the years.

Rose will be remembered by many people in the community for her thoughtfulness, kindness and how she loved and welcomed any person that came through her door.

We the family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Palliative Care Unit, VON and Homecare for providing support, comfort and kindness during this difficult time.

There will be no visitation for the late Rose Johnstone. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 30, 2024, at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the service a reception will take place at the Pier Community Funeral Home 1092 Victoria Road.
