Sydney
It is with great sadness we, the family, announce the passing of our father, grandfather and friend, John MacDonald, age 71, of Sydney, on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, John was the son of the late John Hugh and Agnes Irene MacDonald. John will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. John, as well, had children and grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly, and he spoke highly of them every day.
In his younger years, John was employed with Sydney Steel as a millwright. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, reading and watching sports on TV. His favorite teams were the Toronto Maple Leaf’s and Toronto Blue Jays. John loved attending many sporting events with his grandchildren. John was a great storyteller and would grab your attention when he told a dandy story.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his ex-wife, Julia MacDonald; son, Glen MacDonald; sister, Anne Youden, and grandson, Eric Hewer.
John is survived by his two sons and a daughter, Kirk MacDonald (Jaclyn), Ryan MacDonald (Alicia) and Lori MacDonald (Darryl); sisters, Jackie MacNeil (Dan), and Bea Mackenzie (Chris); grandchildren, Parker, Lilly, Ben, Brendon, and many great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, 4B, especially the care given to John during his time of need. Also, the family would like to send a special thanks to the VON for Johns’ care, over the years.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of John Hugh MacDonald will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Friday, August 23, 2024. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 12 noon in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

My heart is broken to hear of your dad’s passing. He loved you all so much, and he idolized your babies. Those grandchildren were the light of his life. I am sad that there will be no more dinner gatherings with laughs and so many good memories. We are still in Toronto as my husband had his double lung transplant so we won’t be able to attend the service. Please know that I am thinking of you all and sending big hugs. His big personality will be missed by many. Xo Love you always uncle John…..xo
