We the family announce the passing of, John Horechuk, age 96, on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, after a short illness.
Born on January 16, 1928, John was a son of the late Michael and Mary (Tetanish) Horechuk of Galacia, Ukraine. John was the last remaining founding member of the Ukrainian Catholic Men’s Club in 1953.
John lived most of his life in the Pier and was an active member of Holy Ghost Parish and enjoyed singing in the choir. John worked most of his life at Sydney Engineering and Drydock. He was a Leaf and Blue Jay’s fan who enjoyed good chocolate, an occasional shot of rum and was a gentleman who was calm, patient and polite.
John was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Beside his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Jean; brothers, Fred (Barbara), Nick (Stella) and sister, Ann ‘Toots’ Horechuk.
John is survived by his children, Ken (Katie Markotich), Paula Johnson (Bob) and Cathy (Paul MacDonald); grandchildren, Zack, Tyler and Ella; sisters-in-law, Stella (the late Nick) Horechuk, Barb (the late Fred) Horechuk; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Thanks to Dr. Hall, the nurses and staff of Miner’s Lane, Harbourstone Enhanced Care and his previous health care providers Dr. Myatt, Janice and Laura for their care of John in his time of need.
There will be no visitation for the late John Horechuk. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 10 a.m. in Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church, Whitney Pier with Fr. Volodymyr Perun officiating. Following the Mass, a reception will be held in the lower level of the Ukrainian hall. Private family Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, after the reception.

Donations in memory of John may be made to the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church, or a charity of choice.

Sorry to hear of John’s passing. I haven’t seen him for years but worked with him at Sydney Engineering. John was a gentleman and always so helpful. My two daughters who were young at the time and sometimes came in to see me at work would call John “the funny man” because he would always tease them in the kindest of ways.
