It is with profound sadness that the family of Johanna Winton announce her peaceful passing on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the age of 90, while a resident of the Northside Guest Home, North Sydney.
Johanna was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands to the late Johannes and Rigtje (Diktus) Serier who immigrated to Canada in 1956 with 2 small children. While living in Toronto, she met and married a man from Sydney and together they moved to Gabarus.
Johanna is survived by her sister, Sein; children, Sylvia Lucas (Gideon), Jan van der Horst, Herbert Jr., Robert, Mary LaRusic, Johannes, and Chris, as well as 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Johanna was preceded in death by her brother, Ger; sister, Hilda, and her husband, Herbert Winton Senior.
Johanna was a member of the Red Cross Society, was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing darts. She was always a lover of animals and cherished her many pets.
We, the family, would like to thank the staff of Northside Community Guest Home (Theresa Terrace) for the great care given to our mother during her stay.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Pier Community Funeral Home. To honour our mothers wishes, there will be no funeral service. We invite you to please privately celebrate Johanna’s memory in your own way.
Donations in memory of Johanna may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
