Dingwall
It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of our mother, Peggy Petrie on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Glace Bay.
Peggy married Lloyd in 1960 and made their home in Dingwall, where they raised their six children, Lloydie, Maurice, Michelle (Joey), Catherine (Francis), Kimberley and Georgeina (Robert).
Peggy was a wonderful mother-in-law to Lucy, Fanny, and Michael. She was a beautiful nana to Stephen Lloyd (Elaine), Elliot (Angela), Bianca (Morgan), Alexander, Cassie (Nathan), Dalton (Kristen), Ali (Tyson), Mya (Nathan), Maurisa (Blake), Duncan and Demi. Each of them held a special place in her heart. She was a great nana to Margaret Anne, Deidre, Easton, Isabella, Zander, Asher, Hazel, Larkin, and Nixon. She loved when the littles would come to visit!
Peggy was a nickname derived from Margaret. Peggy was born on October 13, 1942, in Dunakym, Glencoe Mills. she was a daughter to the late Alex and Mary (Stewart) Burton and was raised in St Margaret’s Village with her siblings, Alexis, George, Jimmy, Murdock (Violet), Elizabeth and Theresa. Peggy’s first language as a child was Gaelic and always loved returning to Glencoe Mills to visit with her aunt, Cassie, uncles, Charlie, Ranald and grandfather Stewart. Cassie later came to live with us in Dingwall and mother was honoured to provide care to her.
Peggy loved fiddle music, square dancing, broad cove concerts and bingo! She enjoyed her scenic drives, especially to get ice cream. She loved flowers and her favourites were sunflowers, tulips, daffodils and lupins! You’d never see her out without her red lipstick and a big welcoming smile. Peggy was proud of the home she made and was a dedicated employee of the Cape Breton Regional School Board for 25 years. She was a member of the St Joseph’s CWL, Cabot Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Royal Canadian Legion. She loved a good cup of tea and some sweets. And no one could make raggedy Anne’s like Mother!
Her later years were spent in Dominion with Georgeina, Robert and her four youngest grandchildren. Peggy enjoyed her game shows and french fries and was provided loving care when she required it.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband of almost 50 years, Lloyd Petrie; son, Maurice; grandson, Simon Boyd; son-in-law, David; as well as a son and a daughter in infancy.
Mass and Wake for family and friends of the late Peggy Petrie will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall, 430 Dingwall Rd, with Wake beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Jonas Uwaezuoke officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery, Dingwall.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
