Sydney
It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of Marie ‘Cathy’ Marguerite Cassie Covin-Mercer on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney after a short battle with Cancer surrounded by her loving family.
Born on November 3, 1961, in Cheticamp NS, Cathy was a daughter of Ernest and Josephine (Wyrwas) Covin.
Cathy spent a lifetime taking care of others. Every Christmas she supported those who were less fortunate than herself and loved her work as a dietitian for 32 years with Harbourstone Enhanced Care. When she wasn’t working, you could always find her with her friends and family playing Bingo, ice skating, roller blading or going on rides with her partner, Brian on the motorcycle for a timmies run. Cathy had many hobbies, but she was well known for her sewing, crocheting and knitting talent. Everyone loved her crocheted christening gowns that were well sought after.
Cathy is survived by her partner, Brian; children, Crystal, Michelle, Angela and Adam; grandchildren, Wade, Kiran, Breanna, Mitchell, Khoth, Lily, and Chun; sisters, Evangeline (Robert) Crane, Charlottle Anne (Allan) Ley and Patricia Covin (Billy); brother, Leo (Joesphine) Covin; as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved and cherished.
Besides her parents, Cathy was predeceased by her brothers, Clifford, Hubbert, Roger, and Terry.
Cathy will be missed by all who knew and loved her, including her fur babies, Thelma and Tiny. She would like to say to everyone with a flick of her finger to your forehead, “get to the back of the bus”.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Cathy Covin-Mercer will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Monday, May 29, 2023. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date.
For those unable to attend, Live Streaming will be available on our website.

So sorry to read this sad news. My father was a resident at Harbourstone for a few years and that is where my family met Cassie. She made a christening gown at dad’s request for my 13 year old granddaughter. It has been worn by many of his great grandkids over the years. It still is as beautiful as it was the day she made it! Sending sincere condolences to all the family.
