It is with sadness that I learned of Donnie’s passing. I had the pleasure of his company on the golf course last summer. Sorry for your loss!
Mr.MacAskill was my Industrial Technology(Woods) class teacher at Whitney Pier Memorial Junior High. One of the memories I had being in his class was when he presented two options of what we could make out of wood. The first option was, a Spice Rack and the second option was, a shelf to hold cassette tapes. I did not want to make either. I wanted to make a shelf to hold my Nintendo game system and all off the games that went with it. He told me I was not allowed to make it, but I was able to convince him.
He pushed me harder than others in the class and made me do certain steps longer than others in my class and I was the last to be able to take my shelf home. I learned never to give up and keep pushing through even when I had to do more work than others. I still have my shelf today since 1989.
My heart is broken for all of you I have so many fond memories of Donnie when I was growing up Prayers love and hugs to you all during this awful sad time xo😢💔

I will always have fond memories of visits to Ben Eon while on our summer vacations. Uncle Donnie always made sure we had fun by keeping us busy 🙂 and he did the same with Ben and Sam when they were young, they both still talk about the bug catchers they made in Uncle Donnie’s garage many years ago. He was even teaching me things in the garage during my last trip to Cape Breton in October. He was a special man and I am fortunate to have been able to call him my uncle. Rest In Peace Uncle Donnie.

So sorry for your loss Annemarie and family. RIPDonnie !!
It is with a great deal of sadness that I learn of Donnie’s passing. He has always been the first teacher to actually “take me under his wing” and show me what having a shop full of students was really like. He offered his shop as if it was mine for an entire semester and gave me the opportunities to succeed and struggle – both of which I learned greatly from under his guidance. I was gifted with the opportunity to start my career in his shop when he retired. I reflect on all that presented so often with appreciation and joy. My time working along side of Donnie with the inclusive education students provided me with skills and a mindset that shaped much of who I am as a teacher and person. I really cherished the times I got to make it back to East Bay and visit in the shop when ever I returned to Cape Breton. I always knew he would have some project or five on the go!
It will be a different trip home the next time not having that stop for sure. Currently living in B.C., I can’t be there for the funeral but I will be thinking about all Donnie taught me during the service times tomorrow. I send my sincerest condolences to Anne Marie and family in their loss.

Donnie has touched many more than the few 100 listed here. He provided an excellent role model for many students of his wood working shop where safety was the utmost important and quality was stressed. That’s only the school part.
587 Squadron Air Cadets in the 1970’s was top squadron in huge part due to Donnie’s insistence on excellence. Whoever got a reward from the squadron earned it. He stressed equality and fought for the recognition of girls in Air Cadets.
