Louisbourg

The family of John Samuel MacDonald, 75, regretfully announce his passing on Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

A lifelong resident of Louisbourg, John was the son of the late John W. (Jake) and Johanna (Kehoe) MacDonald of Louisbourg.

John is survived by his wife, Julie (Coleman); sons, Brad, Kyle (Ria), Kelly (Danielle); daughter, Holly (Christine); grandchildren, Rian, Bruno, Sophie, and Charlotte; many nieces and nephews and his little dog, Zoe. He is also survived by sisters, Betty Gallagher (Fred), Halifax, Kathy Antle (Pius), Dartmouth; brothers, Allister, Louisburg and Michael (Marilyn), Dartmouth.

Besides his parents in 1987, John was predeceased by his sisters, Jackie Randall (2019), Isabel Macher (2018), Mora McIsaac (1995), Charlotte Ann (1946); brother, Jimmie Norman (2012).

John Samuel was a fine hockey player in his prime, a stay-at-home defenseman well-known in Cape Breton hockey circles for his great slap-shot (with a wooden stick). He was a sailor, having worked with Upper Lakes Shipping and Leitch Transport for over 25 years. Trick or treaters loved going to his house at Halloween, as he’d always be sure to add an unpeeled potato to the treats he’d give out. John Samuel will be remembered for his wit and sense of humour, and he will be missed by all.

Cremation has taken place. As with his wishes, there will be no visitation. A celebration of his life will take place later this summer, when the MacDonald Clan will received family and friends to reminisce about the one and only John Samuel. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
