It is with deepest sadness that we, the family of James ‘Jim’ Leonard Power, age 84, announce his passing on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Whitney Pier, Jim was the son of the late Oscar and Irene (Dunbar) Power. Jim was the was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Jim was a proud veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Ashby Legion Branch 138. Welder by trade and worked at the steel plant and other jobs which led him to travel to different places throughout his career. Jim could always be seen cruising on his scooter throughout Ashby and the Pier visiting friends, making sure he had a story for everyone.

Jim is survived by sons, Oscar (Katherine), Ont., and Jimmy (Dawn), Ont.; daughter, Barbara Reeves (Marvin), PEI, and grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas, Eric, Rogan (Amanda) and Madison. Also left to mourn are his numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of James ‘Jim’ Leonard Power will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 5-6 p.m. with service to follow at 6 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel. A private family internment will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the VON, Home Care, Palliative Care, doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for making Dad’s last days as comfortable as could be.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
