With broken hearts, we the family, regret to announce the passing of Donald ‘Donnie’ Nicholas Brophy, age 75 on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. After a short illness he passed peacefully with his loving family at his side.
Born on August 7, 1943 in Whitney Pier, Donnie was the son of the late Vince and Margaret (Peters) Brophy.
Known to his work mates as ‘Broph’ Donnie started working with Modern City Dairy in his younger days and then worked for many years at Sydney Steel until his retirement. Donnie was the kind of person who cared deeply and would go out of his way to help others. He had a great passion for fishing and hunting and was a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens. The love of his life was his precious grandchildren. Donnie will be remembered by his family and friends for being a kind generous man with a big heart.
Donnie is survived by his daughter, Delores ‘Dee Dee’ (John) Sullivan with whom he resided; son, Randy (Melanie MacMullin); grandchildren, Brandon, Susanna and Dylan; special friend, Maureen Magliaro who was like a daughter to him; sister, Patsy; brothers, Bobby, Tommy, Vince and Terry; special nephew, Colin McCormick; extended family members, Diane (Neil) Clark, Sylvia (Stanley) MacQueen, Blennie MacKenzie; two hunting buddies, Billy and Ralph Mozvik as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Donnie was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Delores (MacKenzie) Brophy; mother in law, Catherine; brother, Frank and sisters, Betty and Judy.
Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Donnie Brophy will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), Sydney on Monday, April 15, 2019.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12 noon – 1:30 p.m. with service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel. Light refreshments will be served in the funeral home reception area following the memorial service.
Private family interment will take place at a later date.
Donations in memory of Donnie may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
