It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Lyda ‘Ma’ Young, age 64, on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Sydney, Lyda was the daughter of the late Hugh and Fredricka (Keesen) Phillips.

Lyda enjoyed going to the lake, spending time with Carley and her long walks everyday. Lyda chose to fight her battle with cancer head on, the same way she did everything else, and putting a smile on the faces of the doctors and nurses. Lyda will be remembered by family and friends for being quick witted, always speaking her mind and for her big personality.

Lyda is survived by daughters, Tracey (Tommy) Tubrett, Barb Young and Kori (Colin); son, Brad, Ont.; ten grandchildren, Ryan, Bailey, Brayden, Breagh, Jaimelyn, Carley, Allison, Michael, Elizabeth, Leah and great-granddaughter, Ryleigh. Lyda is also survived by sisters, Linda (Greg) Murphy, Honey (Danny) MacNeil, Hamilton, Ont., and Bunny; brothers, Wendel (Bip), Junior (Trish), Melvin, Johnny and Glen; brother-in-law, Allan Moss; sister-in-law, Mary Phillips ‘Family Godmother’; aunt, Myrna, Ont.; uncle, Elmer; many nephews, nieces and cousins; as well as her special friend, Bobby Murphy.

Besides her parents, Lyda was predeceased by brothers, Harry, Bruchie and Larry; sisters, Brenda, Wennie, Patsy and the father of her children, Kevin Young.

Visitation for the late Lyda Young will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2018 from 5-8 p.m. at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street), Whitney Pier.

Funeral service to celebrate the life of Lyda will be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the service, light refreshments will be held in the funeral home reception area. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

The family would like to thank Dr. Buhariwalla, doctors and nurses of Cape Breton Regional Hospital, palliative care unit and the VON for the care given to Lyda during her time of need.

Donations in memory of Lyda may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton County or the Cancer Patient Care Fund.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
