96, Sydney
Hazel Hennick (nee Martin) passed away peacefully July 5, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Hazel was born in New Aberdeen, NS on October 31, 1915 to her parents, the late Heber and Elsie (Woodland) Martin, both of Newfoundland.
Hazel grew up in Sydney and attended Sydney Academy before marrying Albert Hennick in 1937. They lived in Whitney Pier until 1947 when Albert built their family home on Sutherland St. in Sydney, where they raised three children. Hazel and Albert marked their 60th anniversary December 18, 1997, just six days before he passed.
Many residents of Sydney would have recognized Hazel’s voice as the one and only receptionist of Hennick’s Services for her son, Ron. Together, they made sure every customer got what was needed. Hazel enjoyed her Sunday drives with Albert and later on with Ron and Betty. In the early years the summer Sunday drives were to a favorite beach in North Side East Bay, and then to the Island View property, which became known affectionately as “The Country”. Many family and friends visited, swam, picnicked, and then roasted marshmallows around the evening campfire. Her grandchildren, and later on, great grandchildren competed to toast the most perfectly golden marshmallow for their Nan. In recent years, a craft show and dinner at a local restaurant were usually on the agenda. We could always count on a great visit and a hot cup of tea with her.
Hazel is survived by her three children, Ken, Sydney, Raylene (John Leadbetter), Enfield and Ron, Edwardsville. Nannie was loved and cherished by her ten grandchildren, including Darlene, with whom she shared a very special bond; 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren were blessed to have her in their lives as well. Hazel is also survived by her brother, Lloyd Martin, Fredericton, NB; and her sister, Beryl (Steve) Elkins, Mississauga, Ont.
Besides her parents, Hazel was predeceased by her husband, Albert (1997); granddaughter, Sheila Hennick (2007); sisters, Marjorie, Elsie, and Mildred; and brother, Amos as well as infant twin brothers; and special daughter-in-law, Betty Hennick (2008).
Visitation for the late Hazel Hennick will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Sunday, July 8, from 6-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Hazel’s life will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012, at 1 p.m. at Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Donations in Hazel’s memory may be made to charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
We will always treasure our memories of Hazel and celebrate her life by living each day to the fullest.

Saddened to hear of Hazel’s passiing. She was a niece of my late grandfather Sydney Philip Woodland 1901-1971 of Taylor’s Bay, NL. Family ties linger tho’ miles separate.
